The Economist: Meditations on Truth and Public Policy
William R. Allen
San Francisco: Institute for Contemporary Studies, 1989
UPAO member William R. Allen, professor of economics at UCLA, has for several years presented radio and newspaper commentaries as “The Economist.” This second compilation of his work covers the years 1981-1988. Here is part of UPAO member Milton Friedman’s Introduction to the book:
“William Allen is a professional economist with a natural ear for economics. He reasons like an economist, eats, sleeps, and breathes economics, as a good economist should. But he has something else, a quality that is far rarer—the ability to explain his economic reasoning to others, in language they can understand and in language that will intrigue and interest them.
“I marvel at his versatility, the wide range of problems and issues he covers, and even more at his skill at finding a fresh and arresting way to present each item.”
